Faith of the Centurion

Matt 8:5-13

5        Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him,

6        saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented."

7        And Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him."

8        The centurion answered and said, "Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.

9        "For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

10      When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, "Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!

11      "And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.

12      "But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

13      Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you." And his servant was healed that same hour.

As we read this account of the faith of the Centurion let us think not about what Jesus did, but about the faith of the Centurion.  In light of his faith maybe we should examine our own.

He came to Jesus believing that He was who He said He was, and that He could heal his servant.

Do we have that kind of faith?  Do we believe that Jesus is who He claimed to be and that He can do for us what He said He would?

The Centurion believed that all Jesus had to do was speak and his servant would be healed.

Do we believe Jesus’ words that He has revealed to us. That they are all we need to be healed from our sins, and they tell us how to get to Heaven

Jesus commended the Centurion for his faith, Verse 10

"Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!

What does He think about our faith?

I believe we can all learn from the centurion’ faith and perhaps increase our own.

If you are a child of God and your faith is not what it should be now is a good time to rededicate yourself.

If you are not a child of God and have the faith that would cause you to obey His words now is the time to do so. Let us not wait until it is too late.
