What Saith The Scripture About God?

God is portrayed in various ways today.  The ideas about who God is as well as His nature are many.  So, in this week's article we direct our attention to What Saith The Scripture concerning God?

God Is Eternal

It is difficult for our finite, limited minds to grasp the concept of eternity.  Nearly everything we do hinges on time.  Such is not the case with God.  God is not limited to time as we are.  Notice:  "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God" (Ps. 90:2).  There is no time in eternity!

God Is Powerful

Much can and needs to be said about the power of God.  Not recognizing the power of God causes one to err.  Jesus told the religious leaders of His day:  "Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God" (Mt. 22:29).

God's power can be seen in creation.  We look out and see the mountains, clouds, seas, etc.  These things testify to the power of God.  David penned:  "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork" (Ps. 19:1).  To the Saints at Rome, Paul wrote:  "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse" (Ro. 1:20).  We are not here by accident.  God created us, our world, and the universe (Gn. 1:1).

God Is Good

In Romans 11:22 it is stated:  "Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God...."  The word "good" in this verse has been rendered as "gentleness" and "kindness" in other places in the Bible.  There is no doubt that the God of Heaven is good.  He has given to us physical blessings (Mt. 5:45) and made it possible to enjoy the spiritual blessings which are in Christ (Eph. 1:3).  God desires that all men come to a knowledge of the truth and be saved (1 Tm. 2:4).

God Is Severe

The word "severe" comes from a Greek word which has the idea of sharpness.  In other words, He means what He says.  When He speaks, we better listen.  By the way, He has spoken to us today (Heb. 1:1,2).  He has told us, by His Word, what we must do in order to have Heaven as our eternal home.  Christ is returning one day (2 Pt. 3:10) and we will receive a just reward for the deeds done while in this body (2 Cor. 5:10).  May God bless you as you seek to learn His Word and obey Him in all things!
