GREAT THEMES REVEALED BY THE PROPHETSGREAT THEMES REVEALED BY THE PROPHETS
Because God spoke directly to man through them, the prophets of old blessed us with a very good introduction to our God and Creator. Without God’s word we would not know him, and we only know sin because He defines it. There are at least five themes or points we can take from what the prophets left their audiences at the time of their work, and ultimately was left to us through God’s word via the Holy Spirit, the Bible:
1. The Holiness of God: God is absolutely pure, righteous, just, merciful, tender, loving, and long-suffering. This point is continuously revealed and played out throughout all the separate accounts of God’s spokesmen, the prophets.
2. The Sovereignty of God: He rules the universe and is in control of all and above all. This same point is echoed in the New Testament in Ephesians 4:6 where we are reminded, “...one God that is above all, and through all, and in you all.”
3. The Immutability of God’s Word: He carries out His promise and one can depend on God to act consistently with His word. He is truly the one and only unchanging thing in a constantly changing world.
4. Repentance and Righteousness: This is the true call of all the prophets. Even though God’s punishment is severe upon the wicked, His mercy is revealed upon the righteous who are of a contrite heart and a broken spirit. This warning echoes throughout all the prophets, repent and sanctify yourselves to the one great and awesome God and He will have mercy.
5. Worship to God: The proper reverence, awe, and respect for God will cause us to always have praise and thanksgiving in our hearts and on our lips.
6. Sin: God abhors iniquity and He will not tolerate, overlook, or excuse it. Nor, will He ever relax or make exception, regardless how much man tries to justify his sins in his own mind. But God will forgive the penitent and those who are of a broken heart and contrite spirit.
These are just six things that God revealed to us about Himself through His prophets. We would be well served to keep all these points fresh and in the front of our minds today as well. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. What a comforting thought that we truly have an anchor, or rock that does not move or change.
