In The Cross

"For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations" Psalms 100:5. This verse is short but it speaks volumes with few words. This verse recently came up on my Bible phone app "verse of the day" and made me think.

We are going to look at this verse in three parts. The first part of the verse, "For the Lord is good..." is a statement all Christians can agree on. This thought is also reiterated by Christ as he counsels the rich young ruler in Matthew 19:17, "So He said to him, 'Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God...." Again we can see this thought of God's goodness as James wrote in James 1:17, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above..."

The second part of the verse is "...His mercy is everlasting..." We know that God's mercy is everlasting by many verses in the Bible. Christ says in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." Christ later says in John 5:24, "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent me has everlasting life..." And again Christ says in John 6:40, "And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life..." We know that this thought of everlasting life is only available to us through Christ's sacrifice and God's everlasting mercy who sent him and designed it.

The third and final part of the verse is "...His truth endures to all generations." This part of the verse was what prompted my first thought. No matter the passage of time, God's Word is everlasting. God's Word was perfect when it was written and will continue to be perfect until time ends and Christ returns. This, to me, is great comfort, knowing once we obey God's Word and become a Chrisitan, there is no need for Bible "updates" or what is "trending." His Word is truth and everlasting and never needs "corrected" or "fixed" like so many things man makes.
