God Desires Unity

We've probably all heard someone say, "it doesn't matter where they go as long as they go to church."  Is that an accurate statement though?  With the thousands of religious beliefs in the world, does it matter about being religiously unified, teaching the same doctrine?  What do the scriptures say about unity?

In Psalms 133:1 it reads, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!"  Dropping down to verse 3 we read, "...For there the Lord commanded the blessing - Life forevermore."  We can see from the Psalmist that unity is good and pleasant to the Lord.

Jesus said while praying in John 17:20-21, "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me."  Jesus here shows us that he values unity in the Church just as Christ and the Father are in unity.

In 1 Corinthians 1:10, Paul tells the church at Corinth, "Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgement."

And one of the best verses to show the importance of unity, Paul said to the church at Ephesus in Ephesians 4:3-6, "endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.  There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all."

These few verses show how God desires unity in the Church.  There are thousands of varying religions in the world, teaching wildly varying doctrines, but yet the inspired word of God tells us to be unified just as Christ and the Father are one.  Just as the Ephesians verses said, there's only one way God tells us to worship and obey him and it's our duty to obey what he said.  If we do, there should be no problem being unified.
